There will come a time where we will all be leaders in the future. To be able to influence, lead, and coach people so that they can be a better version of themselves and to others. Whether it’s through being a manager, through a personal mentor, being a teacher, etc.

But what does it really take to be a leader? Being in your mentee’s shoes? Reading a lot of books about leadership? Or is it just from being promoted to a lead or a manager?

You’re not wrong, all of those are correct. But what really makes a leader is you, yourself.

Mastering yourself — emotions, discipline, management, awareness — they will make you more than a leader. It will teach you, train you, and make you unlock “super-powers” beyond your senses; you will feel & see new situations that will make you become MORE than a leader.

“The very essence of leadership is that you have to have a vision. You can’t blow an uncertain trumpet.”
-Theodore M. Hesburgh

Here are the 4 skills you need to master before you become a leader:

Self Awareness

Being able to master self awareness will make your senses heightened, unlocking another ability in your arsenal. It means that you see things on a secondary point of view; being able to sense cues, signals — even understanding and sensing one’s emotions and subsconcsious thoughts.

With self awareness, you can pinpoint bottle necks or problems in your performance and well being, letting you act on it immediately and in the long run, will drastically improve your performance and abilities everywhere you go.

Self Management

Having the ability to direct and steer your path first before your mentee’s is of great importance in becoming a leader. Being able to set action steps to reach specific goals, being accountable to every action you take, and shifting mindsets to what’s in front of you.

Self Managing your goals and priorities will be important when it comes to action. Not only can you set up targeted goals and points for your mentee, but knowledge, experience, and skill intake will increase as goals become smooth, clear, and achievable.

Your mentee’s growth and progression will reflect on your performance as a leader.

Self Control

Emotions, behaviors, and thoughts are one of the hardest to control when it comes to situations in and outside of the workplace. Anger management, aggressive tendencies to your superiors, lack of motivation, etc,. will surely get in the way to your achieving your targets and goals.

Mastering self control will not only give you the ability to regulate these emotions and cognitive behaviors, but it will also give you this improved focus and concentration over anything, leveling up on your overall performance.

Self Discipline

Resisting temptations are quite hard since they are wanted by our body. Whether it’s food, parties, sex, or any kind of materialistic object, you’ll be wasting precious time and money on those temporary things where it can be used pn somewhere else important.

Teaching Self Discipline will not only make you allocate time and money on more important matters, but it also increases your performance in retaining knowledge, quality of work, and achieving your goals by eliminating distractions in your life and focusing on major goal.

Even without the motivation of becoming a leader, mastering these skills are still important as not only it improve your performance in school, your house, outside, etc., but these skills will also make you invincible in any place you are in.

A path where everything is clear and smooth — no distractions, no stressors, no problems.
